Andreas: I don't think CNBC is the best source for economy news on Germany. ;) This source is better:

statistik-bund.de

(it's an official Government site)

As you can clearly see, every month of 2001 had a lower unemployment rate than the same month 2000. And since the beginning of the year '01 every month had a lower unemployment rate than the month before. It's clearly falling, although the pace has slowed due to an economic slowdown.

Any chance the German government plays the same kinds of tricks as the Danish? If you go by our social-democratic government's official numbers, unemployment in Denmark is down over the 7 or so years they've been in power now. However, most (if not all - or more than all) of that is accomplished by inventing new categories and training programs. These may or may not have any real impact, but they do lower the unemployment FIGURES.

Ted, Re: they said on CNBC yesterday that the unemployment rate had increased 6 quarters in row and that the German economy is weakening.

I don't think CNBC is the best source for economy news on Germany. ;)

Andreas, I agree...in all fairness to CNBC, it was a guest economist who made the comment......and in all fairness to him, I may have misunderstood.

This source is better:

statistik-bund.de

Do you know why Europeans put a comma instead of a dot between a whole number and a fraction....i.e. 9,2 vs 9.2? Of course, I can't tell you why we use a dot except that I know its the right way to do it..hehehehehe.

As you can clearly see, every month of 2001 had a lower unemployment rate than the same month 2000. And since the beginning of the year '01 every month had a lower unemployment rate than the month before. It's clearly falling, although the pace has slowed due to an economic slowdown.

So there is definitely a slowdown? If so, is it expected to worsen, or bottom out at current levels? How are other EU countries doing?

BTW my friends, Thor and Pat, from Dusseldorf have just moved to Mexico from Chicago. Final destination is Mexico City; however they are spending 8 weeks in Cancun, learning Spanish....yeah, right!! Thorsten got a new job in M.C. while Pat plans to take it easy for a while. Thought you'd like an update.
