I'm glad I asked because normalization's on my mind but I wasn't going to do anything about it other than save my thoughts for another time. Likely still too early for me to apply it but who knows. Anyway I'll be giving it more thought now and delving futher into it's theoretical implications. Obviously it's interesting! I must give more thought to your other suggestions before putting my foot in my mouth there though :)

I've never used neural nets and I'm often confused just exactly what it is I'm doing . . . mostly because of my lack of formal training and poor research habits. I believe my comment below about 'normal grouping' maybe related to "or verses and" to permit any number of different switches in the right combinations to signal if the primary switches have flipped first. By any number I mean not a constant.
