I do not normally post any political type stuff, perhaps this should have been a PM, but I wanted to tweak our resident rant writer.
I found out long ago that is not worthwhile to discuss three subjects. Politics, Religion and, for lack a better word, health techniques. No one will ever change their mind, just everyone will get all lathered up. In health techniques, matters such as vitamins, exercise, alcohol, tobacco, etc are discussed. Sooner or later, someone will say "My great uncle, grandfather, etc drank a pint of bourbon and smoked ten cigars every day of his life while he was chasing woman. He died at 105, bless his soul, would still be here today if he had not been shot by that jealous husband. Not much you can say after that.

Suggest you do what I do when I detect a rant, click on the word "next" on the upper right of your screen before reading the post.

<I think the "civilized" west has sagely realized that it cannot impose its moral values on an altogher different world. But if our values don't force them into submission from the top down, our Starbucks, mobile phones and internet will from the bottom up.>

"Civilized" is a word which the 'west' should use sparingly in regard to itself.

I'm finding it increasingly distracting to go to movies due to the constant use of the word fuck and the constant lighting of cigarettes which seems totally gratuitous and I expect is done because of cash payments by the tobacco companies.

It's as though movie-makers have lost [or didn't really have] creativity and imagination. It's a race for the bottom, literally. Movies depend on a suspension of belief and a dreamlike spell being cast. When they break the spell by crass product placement, cigarette advertising and cliched f...ing, the movie become a matter of watching some bad actors go through a commercial script.

Simplistic morons would accuse me of being a prude. That's not true. Morals weren't invented as a kind of silly Victorian charade to play a pointless etiquette game. Nor do they exist because religious wackos like to have lists of vices and evils for the sake of it and to be holier-than-thou. Morals are essential to staying alive and happy. Morals [apart from the violation of other people's person or property] are a matter of voluntary choice and each person needs to find their own moral foundation - suggestions from others based on millennia of experience is a good starting point, as is being raised in a moral environment.

Unfortunately, morals have been devalued because they have been imposed in an authoritarian way by religious wackos, government bullies, busy-bodies and a mindless adherence to being one of the gang which proscribes any deviation from the norm. That process has given morals a bad name. Sensible people reject those processes and one of the ways of rejecting the process is to adopt the things those processes reject - that adoption shows who is running our own life.

People don't want to be thought uncool or prudish, so they sling the f word around and don't wish to be seen as one of the uncool by protesting about it or the culture of hip-hop grot and wasteland of nihilistic nastiness.

The west's is a mob-rule barbarian culture. China's is a barbarian culture too, where the alpha male and his cohort maintain total dominance hierarchy. They deserve each other.

Hombre, I'm not sure that 'our values' are desirable for China. It depends on which ones 'we' mean.

Anyone who thinks I'm a prudish moralistic wowser dictionary.com can go f... themselves!
