If drilling on 2000 of the millions (did I say millions?) of acres of ANWR will contribute, even fractionally (say, 1/1000 of one percent) to our country's ability to defend itself, then I say we trash the 2000 acres (or the entire ANWR), if necessary. We need to be putting first things first.....

Like I said, you could describe one of several crisis scenarios that would bring me to your camp, but today I view this as completely unlikely and unnecessary. Further, what justification does a proponent of a free market economy (you have advocated non government intervention here quite strongly) see for the tax breaks proposed in this legislation the WH and House passed last week?

Similarly, when we compromise national security, even just a little, to save the caribou in ANWR, it is stupid behavior that reasonable people will conclude should not be done.

This is very typical...you are not able to rationally defend your position, so you bring up the fear factor...national security. The Rep party is the party of scare tactics. To get these big budget, life threatening, environment damaging issues thru the Congress, the Reps. preface their introduction with "should X, Y or Z not be passed, the security of the American people will be in jeopardy".

Its seems every Rep. leader of the 20th century was riddled with that paranoia....the other dubya, Reagan, Nixon etc. Maybe that's why Nixon's video clips always show him sweating like a piglet.

Isn't it commonly believed that the Caribou will mate more predictably near the warmth of the pipeline? Thus the general assumption is that the pipeline will help the Caribou.

The big budget boondogle Democrats are using irrational and unfounded scare tactics.
