<Any money Intel is making is from selling 866MHZ to 1GHZ PIIIs for $150 to $200 as corporate boxes. They decided to kill off that business next quarter. They may find they've made a terrible mistake.>

The stupidity of the PIII phase-out and an all-out push of P4 into IT accounts boggles my mind. I don't understand it. AMD is not forcing this move. On the contrary, the lack of continuity and P4's power requirements will help AMD to get the foot in the door. I think its a knee-jerk reaction to fill the FABs at any cost. Remember last year Intel was ramping 180nm capacity like mad among projections of multi-year shortages. Now they are trying to use the equipment before they have to throw it in the dumpster. I have no other explanations at this point.

It is like eating rancid food because it has been paid for.

You can configure otherwise identical 1400MHZ PCs at gateway with P4 and Athlon.
They are the same price - $1,299.

P4 mobo costs $50 more than Athlon mobo and P4 Ram costs $25 more.

So, if Gateway is paying $150 for Athlon 1400, they are paying $75 for P4 1400.

Even if your mobo and memory numbers are accurate, where does it say that the material costs to Gateway for the P4 machine and Athlon machines are the same?

You could argue that Gateway might choose for whatever reason to accept fewer profit $ per P4 box. Even better, you could argue that Gateway could sell more P4 units than Athlons, so they accept fewer profit $ per box.
