John, Re: Hard to believe they wouldn't want to license P4, they seem like a very aggressive company.

I agree that it is in Nvidia's best interest to license the P4 bus. But it might be the case that Intel don't want to give Nvidia a license. They already gave NVDA's arch-enemy ATI a license and Intel's chipset group probably don't want to have a chipset available which is faster (DDR double channel), probably cheaper (the version without graphics) and has more features then i845 and i850. I could imagine that's there always some kind of "fight" between the processor and chipset group: One wants to sell as many P4 licenses as possible while the other wants the market for themselves.

If my assumption is true, Nvidia's reaction isn't too surprising. They would never admit that they did everything possible to get a license from Intel but they refused. But maybe I am just to paranoid. ;-)

Edit: Looks like Anand agrees with me: "Even Intel is divided over the P4X266. There are some groups at Intel that are very much in favor of the release of the P4X266, mainly because of its ability to push for increased Pentium 4 sales. There are others however that are adamantly in opposition to its entry into the marketplace and they will not stop at anything to make its birth as painful as it can be."

John,

Hard to believe they wouldn't want to license P4,

They stated that they are targeting their stand-alone GPUs for the huge P4 ramp, and the integrated nForce for AMD platforms. They were very excited that unlike with the i815/P3, there is no integrated graphics solution for the P4. This market is where they expect to sell their expensive GeForce3 cards.

NVidia CEO is coming on CNBC in a few minutes.
