baseball and basketball, as well as US football, are very minor outside the US.

Baseball is big in Japan and in several Latin American countries. Basketball is growing outside the US. Even Football (which truly is minor outside the US) has leagues in Canada (with slightly different rules) and Europe (but its sortof a minor league for the NFL and almost all the players are American).

Edit - Answering your other question -
Ah, but what if (say) sudden death overtime resulted in no winner after 1 hour? 3? 6? 20? 60? They keep playing for ever? At some point, especially in a time-limited tournament (e.g., the World Cup) then you have to use other means.

In playoff games of the major American sports they have just kept on playing sometimes through 4 or more overtimes. It doesn't happen often and its never been close to 20 hours but some games have been quite long.

Why do soccer people get so defensive about their "world sport"? It's clearly fading as such, as basketball, baseball, golf, hockey and even football invade non-US turf.
