Well, it actually happened much more recently, and right here in the US. Look up your history on the New Deal under Roosevelt. Also, look at how much Reagan spent on the military. Those two spending efforts flooded the economy with money. Of course, there was the debt hangover from Reagan, but you can't argue that it doesn't bolster the economy in the short term. There is incontrovertable evidence that it does. Also, remember that part of the economics formula for GDP includes the big G (gov't spending), in addition to the big C(consumer spending), minus the big T (taxes). Then there is the multiplier effect from C and G spending that also expands the economic pie and bolsters the markets.

TA,

Now you can't possibly argue that government spending isn't a big part of the economy? Roads? Schools? Defense? Various welfare programs and administration of such? Government payrolls, Dept of Agriculture, NASA, etc.

And "The French Government paid people to dig up trenches
by the road and then paid them again to cover them up again!!!." Maybe Gov't spending can do good at times as well. What about the Blue Ridge Parkway? Wasn't that built at a time the government spent in a plan mostly to revive the economy? Our interstate system? Dams and huge reserviors like Fontana?

mindmeld: correction: 1_8_4_8_ not 1948 as I previously wrote,
when "the French Goverment Public Works " spending occurred:

cats.ohiou.edu

And because the Economy was in the toilet and there was no real useful work to do,

The French Government paid people to dig up trenches

by the road and then paid them again to cover them up

again!!!.

mindmeld:" Government spending to pull us out ": They already tried that in
one of the first Socialist Governments in France in 1948. Repeat: 1_9_4_8_ :
The French Government paid people to dig up trenches
by the road and then paid them again to cover them up again!!!.

Should we go back to that ???
Maybe Billy boy and Al with Greenprint can join in to give
a hand fix the mess they created.....

Wrong. Actually, government spending is a very big part
of what makes this economy tick. In fact, if the economy
starts to really tank, beyond what it has already, the only
way out may be the government spending a shitload of money.
