I thought game theory for the British 3G auction worked beautifully: it resulted in a great price for the spectrum, from the British government's point of view. The theorists were working for the British government, if I am not mistaken.

What was wrong with the 3G auction... bad example IMO, but I agree with the rest of your post.... although I'd never pigeon hole 'all' economists. There are tons doing other.
