Art: In a perfectly rational world, service providers would eagerly switch to a system that is more efficient, less costly, with less spectrum requirements than competing systems.

In this capital restrictive environment operators are going to deploy what is a "known" commodity.. And that is VOICE!! Investment Capital for an "unkown qualifier" like High Speed Mobile Data goes to the bottom of the pile..

I coined the term "WDMA Technology" late last year on the GSTRF thread.. "We Don't have Money Anymore".

It is a Universal Technology that is deployable on any network..

As I have postulated on various occasions.. If you were Vodaphone.. And you had a commodity like VOICE that was a known business model.. And you had a bunch of expensive spectrum sitting around generating ZERO revenue... Along with a bunch of cell sites with the Core Network stuff already installed and operating on 900Mhz. What would be the "cheapest investment" you could make to generate revenue from that NEW spectrum??

Art-Do you really believe the capital markets are going to be closed tighter moving forward than they have been in the past? With 7 rate cuts, surely credit will be looser in the coming quarters. I see this as a part of the picture that is improving, not getting worse, don't you?

Art, my God. You've been so bullish on QCOM for so long. What is the cause for the change in tune?

Art:

You make an interesting case. Focusing on the capital markets, rather than the technology, is a view that seems increasingly in vogue. Probably rightly so. As to Q*, I think I'd keep an eye on the 3G spectrum in Europe. If, as pcstel surmises, that gets opened up to GSM it will, IMHO, severely effect Q* revenue projections. I wonder how much w-CDMA revenue is cooked in to current projections, overtly or otherwise?

I don't disagree with your theory. It's certainly true that the Eu carriers have gotten themselves in a pickle.

But I hav not seen any press releases stating that they are delaying the deployment of 3G for any other reason then it doesn't exist for them yet. We continue to read about new contracts and new deployment dates. To date the only thing in dispute is when WCDMA will be ready for prime time not if. Also 3G as you know is well under way in all other parts of the world with 1X. The EU does not rule the wireless world as they like to think and try to make everyone else think so.

With the mediocre performance I have seen to date with GPRS when it does work, they will have a tough time convincing people that this is as good as 3G when the rest of the world will be sporting color screens and VOD very soon.

Again a very plausible theory and one that requires a sharp watch for any hints of the FUD masters touting GPRS over 3G.
