Mad2,

>Any retribution should be directed at the terrorists, not their misguided supporters who are being used.
Directing anger at the "masses", be they associated due to religious association or nationality is a mistake....<

Sorry, I disagree. The Palastineans that are dancing in the streets are our enemies. Anyone who would rejoice in an act like this would do the same themselves. If our government doesn't put the hammer down right now, I'll lose faith in them forever. If Bush is a pussy here, he's DONE! He won't be elected as a GARBAGE MAN!

I Agree mostly.
Now how do you remove the threat, and re-educate the young into a correct line of thinking?
Sun Tzu's Art of War says you can't go in brutally, because you may create a worse problem than there was when you originally went in.
Those children dancing and cheering about innocent civilian deaths... How can this be corrected?
If a retaliation on their leaders is orchestrated you remove on level of the problem, but their teaching have gone on. The next in line are now not only instilled with the legacy of their fathers, but now a resentment of those who took their fathers away.

I still cant get a clear thought or grasp at this situation.
This is the sickest thing to happen in my life, and hopefully remains so...

Mad2, interesting to see what discussion developed.

But there are some small disturbing things in the way how GWB treats the tragedy (besides that he appearently continued with his presentation at the school for 1/2 hour after having been informed - which is simply inexcusable):

"All supporters of the terrorists must be punished." While I believe that what he intended to say is that he seeks to apply "radical treatment" of a cancer including the nucleus, which is in general a good thing (at least if you really manage to extinguish all roots), even some European leaders warned of an escalation multiplying the losses. It would be impractical to highly questionable to punish all supporters: -the grocer who sold good to the terrorists, -the bank at which they maintained accounts, -the (civilian?) airliner who trained pilots turned terrorists, or supplied manuals? -the mad arabian kids who don't know what they did in celebrating the tragedy...

The last time collective guilt was the reason was for racial cleansing in Serbia, and before, in Hitler Germany when Jews have been murdered only for their confession, Socialists have been terminated for their political opinion, and again after the world war when many innocent germans have been murderer only because of their presence in central European countries.

What did Hitler say after one of the assaults directed against him?
-make a list of suspects
-kill them all

If revenge, and only revenge is the preferred means and good excuse at the same time, then good night, and god bless, the world won't.
Sadly enough, there is no way to undo the tragedies at the WTC and the Pentagon (and revenge is not the way either).
