<<I understand that fire fighters should know something about structures.>>

I think they knew, but they also knew there were thousands of people in the building that needed their help, and they went in anyway. Makes their actions all the more heroic in my eyes...

Cynic ...... I was wondering why helicopters are not in the air to save them, of why no one tried to do something from the outside to put out the fire ......... lots of question of why??

cynic, you've sure expressed an unpopular topic with the "shoulda known" scenario. controversy is something i know about. ;-)

here's my view...

my heroes are all the people that went to help. if they new the risks then they are a double heroes. if they didn't... they are still heroes... they risked their lives - knowingly or unknowingly - to help others in need... when all is said and done... that will be the pinnacle of human level achievement.

was the guy who wouldn't leave b/c his paraplegic friend was unable to get out foolish? he's a double hero - sacrificed his life to help a friend.

those three passengers on the pa flight are double heroes, too. they faced down fear and the inevitable slashings to save the lives of others.

nothing like this happened before. the reaction was to save lives - to help. the reactions were NOT to hit the textbooks and analyze the situation to death while others died. I can't fault the attitude in my own mind. god bless them. for those that unfortunately won't make it out alive... they died a righteous death.

i hope if my time comes to face down horrors of this kind of magnitude i risk my life to help others - even strangers.

as i said, in the end, i think that will be understood to be the pinnacle of human development.
