bin Laden is last reported to be worth $4-6 billions. $400 MM don't buy much these days.

How about a Swiss account?

It's never really been Bin Laden's personal money...

He has become a kind of islamic Che Guevera, but it's his organization that is behind these attacks. They are financed by Saudis, Egyptians, Pakistanis... in general wherever well off fundamentalists are concentrated.

When we launched a symbolic cruise missile attack against some of his supposed camps, nearly overnight enormous sums of money flowed into his organization. CDROMS whose proceeds go to his organization are widely for sale in Pakistan. None of this is any secret.

These extremists are members of the most dangerous planetary sect going. When we look at the financial success of other sects, it shouldn't be any surprise that Bin Laden is able to accumulate such a war chest for these activities.

The money is surely distributed among hundreds of off-shore type accounts. It'll be hard to track down, but worth a try. I feel that in general the uncontrolled flow of funds on a planetary scale has been very dangerous.

For those that have talked about freezing bin Laden's assets, this from this morning's Wall Street journal:
"But going after the bank accounts of terrorist like Osama bin Laden could prove far harder. For years, Mr. bin Laden has been known to use Islamic banks in Persian Gulf states such as the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain and US efforts to track that money and to staunch the flow have hit stiff resistance among banking and government officials in the area, said one former Clinton administration official who asked not to be named."

Sorry, no link.
