The reasons are mostly emotional i think, not logical. Also if vacation travel is considered consumer spending, that portion of it is going to drop very sharply, as GST has noted.

not only is there the psychological factor to consumer spending, there is also the possibility of rising prices. have you factored in the possibility of rising material costs glenn?

Ditto. It seems to me that after the initial shock Americans will slowly go back to their routines. The money not spent this last five days is still there in their bank accounts and before Christmas is here it will all be spent up.
