I would like to see us retaliate without firing a single shot. I would like us to run this investigation as the most important prosecution in our history. Compile the evidence and present it to the world until it is irrefutable who is responsible for the attack.
If it is Bin Laden and his network, world pressure needs to be brought to bear on the countries that harbor them and force them to give them up. Not by threat of war, but by the sheer weight of the evidence and the shame it represents. This needs to be done on a world stage in the bright glare of a free press.

We should be relentless in this process and continue to gather new evidence each day and present it with the request that they release them, either to us or one of the other middle eastern states, for trial and punishment.

If it is the right way to treat a criminal in the US, it is the right way to treat a criminal outside the US.

It is the only way we can avoid a tit for tat war of endless retaliation. Look at Northern Ireland. Look at Israel and Palestine. These conflicts go far back into antiquity and there seems no way to resolve who hit who first. So it goes on for years and the bloodshed mounts.

If after we have gathered all the evidence and they still won't give them up, then and only then, should we use force to go in and get and them and bring them to justice. Justice...NOT REVENGE.

Peace and Love to all.

<<if the UN says americans have to move out of their house and let native americans take over... what would happen?>>

this is a ridiculous analogy because according to your first link, many jews moved to the area over the preceding 30 years, and the conflict was set in motion. the jews did not attack and drive the arabs out, they increased their numbers through immigration and were obviously unwelcome, which then required a political decision by the british. many arabs left on the advice of their neighbor countries who promised a quick win of the whole country. if they won, there would be no conflict because there wouldn't be a jew left alive (agreed?)

<<however, this "we did nothing wrong, why the heck are all those lunatics mad at us" attitude seems to be based more on self interest than reality.>>

nobody says that! this generation finds itself in this position, so how do we resolve the problem? IMO the arabs have the right to be angry, but the jews have the right to continued existence. so what is preventing a reasonable solution? there will only be peace in the middle east when the arabs love their children more than they hate the jews. (think about that for a moment, and compare to Western values). your position of support for their grievance is what encourages them to back away from the generous peace terms last offered.

<<one question, though. didn't the UN recommend creating two states - an israel state and a palestinian state? if so, does israel actively support the creation of a palestinian state >>

yes Isreal supports the idea of two states. the jews were, and I believe still are, prepared to accept peace with defensible borders. the arabs were, and I believe still are, only prepared to accept the entire region jew-free.
