I wonder, if an atheist was asked to pray for their best friend who is in an awful way, would the atheist do it? And, after all, isn't that what the song is about? A small prayer for us all.

The state isn't making people NOT sing God Bless American- the state is simply not singing it. Christianity is everywhere- you can't go into a store without being overwhelmed by Christmas merchandising. I see absolutely no reason why the state needs to be involved, unless you wish to make Christianity even more overbearing that it already is. And I, quite frankly, do not see the point of that in a free society. If you want a religious state- which would not be free- than fine, but otherwise, Caesar and Christ should be kept separate. Render unto Caesar...and all that (of course that was written before the Christians thought they had Caesar's ear...oppotunism is all)
