I don't see the protest of 6% of the nation as the same as an honest self-examination on the part of the population.

IMO, what you have described is our country's deeply-important freedom of speech (a freedom which, by the way, is being derided all over SI these days by those who equate patriotism with total acceptance of our current foreign policy), not self-examination.

No place on earth has what we have and I for one am grateful for it.

I, too, am a proud American. I am, however, not averse to our taking some responsibility for our support of nefarious gulf-area leaders in the interest of cheap oil.

Hi Bill,

The point was made, by me, that Afghan/Pakistan street people are motivated at three levels of devotion: 1. religion, 2. tribe 3. nation. Kinda like you except for number 1 maybe.

At the pinnacle of the Islamic religion is Peace with Justice. The Asian people are not being presented with the injustice of the terrorists and are being barraged with negative information about American politics in the Eastern hemisphere. I know how you'd like to just kick butts and come back home to monday night foot ball but we aren't involved in that kind of situation.

Poet and I were discussing how the truth and injustice of the terrorist movement could be delivered to the Eastern Hemisphere. Nothing unpatriotic about that. Success in defeating these terrorists goes far beyond blood letting. It must include exposing their evil to people who are otherwise decent. We can do it, but not without a little frank openness on our own part. It seems like that is happening so I am hopeful that things will improve soon. We will have trouble for years to come but we can do some good things right now to minimalize that. Justice is all most of us want.
