If there is a peaceful solution to Kasmir, I can see America acting as a bridge between India and Pakistan.

How can there be a peaceful resolution to Kashmir when Pakistan is still sponsoring terrorism in India? That's like saying there could have been a peaceful resolution to the bin Laden problem without the U.S. going after him into Afghanistan. What bin Laden is to the U.S., Musharraff and the ISI is to India. Indian civilians are getting killed every day in Kashmir because of terrorist incidents. These incidents have gone up since September 11 not down ... the majority of these terrorists come from Pakistan and are supported by the Pakistani government and the ISI.

Also, whether Musharraf stays in power or not I'm betting there will definitely be a war between Pakistan and India any day now. The only way there will be no war between Pakistan and India is if Pakistan is forced to stop it's aggression towards India in the way of state sponsored terrorism in India by Pakistan. That problem hasn't really even begun to be addressed the way it should.

Pakistan has been allowed to terrorize India because the U.S. needed them to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan. India has been getting mostly lip service in the way of support of their fight against terrorism. This war is far from over.

There will also be civil war inside Afghanistan and Pakistan. I predict those two countries will split up into at least 3 different countries because of the differences within their populations. The Pashtuns in the south of Pakistan will probably form a partnership with the Pashtuns in southern Afghanistan and form their own country.

Hi Joseph,

>I can see peace worked out between Pakistan and India, under the support and guidance of the US.

That would be great. But for that Pakistan will have to give up its claims to Indian occupied Kashmir. Which is not easily done since that forms the central theme in Pakistan's Foreign Policy.

India considers its part of Kashmir its own territory. Even though it does have claims on the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (since Kashmir did accede to it in 1947), it doesn't have any intentions to take it. If India wanted that land it would have kept it after winning two wars with Pakistan. On both these occasions India went back to the Line of Control (UN designated) and gave back the land to Pakistan.

But Pakistan doesn't want to recognize the Line of Control (which has now existed for over 50 years) as the legitimate border. It wants the rest of Kashmir.

Well Kashmir is a integral part of India. It has its own democratic institutions. With an elected mostly Muslim governing body. The Kashmiri people (both Muslims and Hindus) have more rights than the Indian residents of any other state in India (in that only Kashmiries can own land in Kashmir, thus there is no issue of new settlements etc.). Thus India sees no reason to give up Kashmir.

And thus the two sides will have a tough time coming together while Pakistan continues to claim Kashmir.

After all what can be Pakistan arguments to have Kashmir:
A) It can't claim that Kashmir is formally its, since Kashmir formally went to India.
B) It can't claim that Kashmir should come to it on account of the Kashmiries being Muslims. Since though Kashmir is the only majority Muslim state in India, there are all together more Muslims in India then in Pakistan.
C)It can't claim that it shall provide better representation for the Kashmiries, since while the Indian State of Kashmir is a democratic state, Pakistan itself is a Military dictatorship (and has had lots and lots of military coups in its 50 year history).
D) It can't even claim better human rights or standard of living for the people of Kashmir...since there is a very detailed history of human rights violations in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and we all now how great the Pakistani economy is ( about 60% of GDP goes to dept repayment, and another 25% to defence). Compare that with India which is among the top 5 countries with the largest GNP.

Hello Robert........" I can see peace worked out between Pakistan and India, under the support and guidance of the US.".......
It would be great if the USA could pull off this sort of thing but how could they do this without appearing to favor
one country over the other. They have been trying to do this very thing with Israel the Palestinians and the Arab states for years with no success.
In the end they may have to sort out their differences on their own.
