Hi Vendit,

I did read the article when it came out, and I think you and others have already listed the reasons for the decline in eyeballs here and the reduction in the growth rate of eyeballs at the other two. I think the Internet's value is in narrowcasting, not broadcasting, and as a result different communities with different outlooks and cultures can co-exist. I like to think of Yahoo as a cross between WB and the Home Shopping Channel, Raging Bull is Fox, and we, of course, are a fun-loving version of PBS!

Maybe we need to have regular auction fund-raisers...

Vendit, that WSJ article was written last year. Since then the Yahoo and Raging Bull sites have also suffered major declines in postings. Silicon Investor merely led the trend.

Since INSP hasn't seen reasons to upgrade SI as yet...perhaps we can help with ideas. How can any message board site make money?

Lifetime memberships don't seem to be enough to bring in a constant revenue stream. Pay by the month? Easy for a person to say No, not this month.

Offer Magazine-like product? Higher cost for single issue....lower cost for yearly subscription...?

Ads? People don't seem to like them. Although I personally have no objection to small ad reminders...(i.e. Land's End, Nordstrom, etc...)

How does Yahoo make money?

Genealogy is a 2nd or 3rd most popular hobby in the country. Ancestry.com does make money. Rootsweb is FREE (has hundreds of thousands of participants) and funded by Rand Corp I believe.
