I thought I made it clear that it isn't up to me to show how I'm harmed. It up to the advocates to show convincingly how their proposal enhances my freedom and well being.

Show me why I should be alarmed by the National ID, and I will be alarmed. Otherwise, I will be pretty indifferent

I trust this administration, too. Voted for Bush and contributed, to boot.

But would you have trusted the immediate past administration with your personal info at their fingertips? As a matter of principle, should they have it without probable cause?

What about all the scandals about reviewing FBI files of their political enemies, firing the WH travel office w/o cause, covering up sexual harassment allegations in a civil lawsuit through obstruction of justice, etc., etc.?

Are you sure that we won't have an even worse administration in the future that makes the last one look like the great defender of privacy and individual rights? What do you think they might use all that information for? Do you think those national i.d. cards will include voter registration information such as political party? Doesn't this seem to be getting a little scary yet? Maybe they'll even require everyone's internet nom de plume to be on that little magnetic card.

Also, what happens when someone loses their card and someone else puts it to improper purpose? Can the government expect that everyone will compare the thumb print on the card with the person's thumb print before accepting it as i.d.? Banks can't even get tellers to do that consistently now when cashing a check...
