If SI had a feature where you could post to the board in general without having to reply to a specific message, I would try to use that ...

Actually, Chris, they do. When you first click on a thread, and the header message comes up, right below that (and just before the list of new messages) is a click on that says "Post Message." That is intended to be a message to the board in general.

That said, my opinion (which everyone has been eagerly waiting for) ........... IS that anyone should feel free to post to anyone else on any board. That is what public message boards are for. If one chooses to express their opinions on a public board, it is simply silly to try to stop selected persons from responding to them. A ridiculous amount of energy has been expended here discussing a preposterous idea ... energy that could have put to better use discussing truly important matters, such as, well, someone's gallbladder for example.

If SI had a feature where you could post to the board in general without having to reply to a specific message, I would try to use that where possible to avoid posting responses to particularly individuals when they so requested. But it doesn't,

Actually, it does. It's a feature I often use here and almost always us on FADG these days (when i'm not reading the threads more than desultorily.)

You just click on the thread header, in this case:

Subject 50472

Then look down above the list of messages to where it says:

Previous 40 | ----------- | View Recent | Post Message

And click Post Message.

The message always is addressed then to the thread founder (here, YYB, on FADG, FaultLine) but is understood to be a post to the thread, and never receives a personal reply.

(And sometimes I simply post to own last post. Accomplishes the same thing.)

As to whether I should self-censor my postings beyond the limitations imposed by the Terms of Use, I choose not to do so.

Well, I hoped you would make a more considerate choice. Few SI posters substitute the TOU for their consciences. For example, I am choosing not to discuss anything you have said or done (not related to Poet, btw) on another thread, though I believe that to do this would not be a violation of the SI TOU. I "self-censor" because it seems, somehow, the right thing to do.

After a certain post of yours regarding Poet and her personal life, I asked you not to post further to me. Since that request, you've posted to me only a couple of times. Let's hope that as you exercise the power you have attained to post unwelcome messages to Poet, you do so with equal restraint. It will be interesting, of course, to see exactly how often you find yourself compelled to address Poet, or discuss her.

The nice thing about you, Hodgkins, is how few words it takes to general an endless stream of pompous sanctimony from you.
