The notion of 'religious hierarchy' is Western and very much in the minority of traditions. Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Hinduism, and indeed most of Orthodox and Protestant Christianity itself all share this particular 'shortcoming' with Islam.

Zeev:

++++In Islam, there is no way to excommunicate a deviant, every uneducated egomaniac can call himself a "mulah" (like Omar) and issue fatwas

The question should be "Why" every uneducated egomaniac can call himself a "mulah" (like Omar) and issue fatwas! The question should be "Why" millions of followers come to think of uneducated egomaniac evil as their religious leaders? Khomeini is viewed something like the Pope (in fact higher than the Pope for which he has been given the title Imam and has been placed at the same level as Iman Ali, Imam Hossein, Imam Reza, etc.). Do you honestly believe the Pope and Khomeini have anything in common?!

It is not the lack of hierarchy, it is more a matter of teachings as promoted by the religion. Christinaity has been sanitized, Islam has a long way to go (in my view) to be considered a humanistic faith for all ages.

Re <<I think that one of the major shortcomings of the Quran and thus Islam is the lack of religious hierarchy. >>

I disagree with any hierarchy that give unchallengeable religious powers to any human being.

As an adult, I have chosen to not follow any organized religion, that takes away indipendent thinking, due to all the atrocities that has been committed in the name of religion and the events of Sep. 11th are just another sad example.
