Well, today I went to Kmart to exchange a auto battery. I was at the counter and picked up an add and there was a camcorder for 210 bucks or so. I think it had 500x digital zoom. I've bought two camcorders in years past. But I'm not up on the current feature cost of camcorder equipment. I am quite certain that the 200 dollar model unit I saw at Kmart has more features than the one that just wore out and the one I bought 3 years ago for 600 bucks.

Library copy of Consumer reports tends to go over features. Also you could try a camcorder mag just to read about features.

Computing power and inexpensive software make for linear editing of videos.

But I have found that I never look at movies that I've taken. But the photos with a digital camera have interest. The question is, what is it you want to do and what cameras have the features that get you there.

But online I've used steves-digicams.com
but this may be to high end.
desktopvideo.about.com;

I'd be glad to discuss and features and pros and cons.

I just bought a Sony to tape my new kid and I am pretty happy with it. Was looking at digital vs. non digital and ended up getting a hi-8 Sony trv68 non digital for just under $400. The digitals are cool, but you only get half the time on the tapes (1 hour vs. 2) and the one I wanted was a little over $1,100. The quality of the non-digital is similar to a super vhs recording, while the digital is supposed to be better than that (500 lines of resolution). The sony's have a cool feature that lets you tape in complete darkness (infrared light). Let's you feel like you could help the Ranger's out on a night mission <g>

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth. The Sonys are a little more than other brands with similar features, but seem to be made and designed better (imo).

The great news is I have a brand new kid to tape. He's a whopping 2 1/2 days old! If anyone starts a "new daddy" or "experiencing a birth catagory" I will type their eyes off (kind of like talking your ear off). An awesome and emotionally powerful event. Me and my wife are SUPER happy and all three of us are doing great.
