There was a time when I liked Chomsky, but he has shown himself to be little more than an America hater lately. He's a left wing knee jerk reactionary. I think he's getting calcified in his old age.

Do you think by posting that I was indulging in "uncomplicated patriotism"? I've posted several things critical of our countries' foreign policy in the past. Just ask Neocon, he constantly admonished me for it.

I have, from time to time, used the term "flag waver" for this type of patriot. I suppose "absolutist patriot" would also be descriptive

I think the term "jingoist" fits well. It captures not just the fervent, even zealous, support, but also the attitude that the military is the epitome of the nation, that an activist military strategy is always right and must always be supported, whatever it is (and the confidence that military adventure will always be won).
Hence any criticism of military policy in particular attracts the bile of jingoists. They take it as tantamount to a direct attack on the men of the military.

Of course, a jingoist is barely even able conceive of - still less understand - any viewpoint besides their own as patriotic. So they conclude that anyone "not with 'em is aginst 'em" and ergo a traitor.

At least, that's my take.

I have had occasion to characterize various people as anti- American, on both the Left and Right. When asked what I meant, I have explained that anti- Americanism, in the guise of constructive criticism, has an axe to grind, to denigrate the United States, undermine its morale, and hold it to impossible standards. Patriotism implies more than not being anti- American, it implies that one is pro- American, that is, that in contrast one makes the positive case for the United States, helps build morale, and holds it to standards that allow for human fallibility. It is especially important to be pro- American in times of crisis. To a patriot, it is sometimes not enough to swear that one is not anti- American in one's criticism, when one is clearly not willing to be markedly pro.........
