Jim, Re: "If Microsoft knew AMD couldn't supply, why was the X_box originally designed around the K7?"

Good point. But besides including an Athlon in their original mock-up, how much did Microsoft have invested in the design with respect to the Athlon at that time? The Athlon could just as easily have been a place-holder than an original design.

Jimbo - Re:"If Microsoft knew AMD couldn't supply, why was the X_box originally designed around the K7?"

Microsoft used the Intel architecture for its design specm not some low quality clone from an unreliable producer -- like Cyrix or AMD.

And Microsoft decided to go with the original, the inventor of the architecture, instead of the copyists. it couldn't afford "cheap imitations" that would hurt the success of the the X-Box.

Jim, <If Microsoft knew AMD couldn't supply, why was the X_box originally designed around the K7?>

Maybe because the nForce was originally designed around the K7?
