Wouldn't their tongues have worked as well? That practice may have started simply as a practical joke on fenwick the unwashed. Nevertheless, sailors must have been relieved when compasses, binoculars and thermometers were invented. btw, wonderful site you included.

Which probably explains why there were no woman sailors until more modern navigational devices were invented.
