The problem with many universities is they teach "single loop learning" skills. In other words, the Professor puts out the information, and the students memorize and spill it back at him/her in the form of papers and such.

"Double loop learning" where you challenge the assumptions around which the ideas are presented, typically only occurs at the masters level.

Since so many professors are radical leftists, and grades are the rewards for performance, your typical college graduate receives an indocrination instead of an education.

There are many exceptions of course. But for the majority this is sadly true.

There are many people who go thru life and have no spiritual center. They assume they are successful because of something inherently better about themselves and cannot accept that any luck could have anything to do with it. In world that celebrates hero's the only ticket they have is a degree. The degree becomes some personal measure of a persons worth.

The value of a degree is it's ability to give opportunity to get into the door to many jobs. It is an accepted measure that proves something. It is not perfect, but does define a person who could focus for several years and pass tests to show they memorized a lot of stuff.

Some degrees from some schools will also correlate with a demonstrated ability to think at higher levels.

Other degrees mean one has been exposed to specific kinds of information.

A degree means all of the above and is used as a differentiator. But I have met many who have a degree and have no common sense. It's rarer among those with engineering degrees.

But I know others with no degree who are excellent in engineering and many other fields.
