That DDR memory is just so darn expensive. MM are just going to gouge the consumer. It's too expensive, guess consumers are going to have to settle for that less expensive RDRAM.

1GB DDR sticks now are all buffered registered ecc. Another nasty surprise is that they don't work with all the motherboards we had in house.

Almost all mobos under the sun take unbufferred dimms (cheaper), which means there are NO consumer mobos that work with the buffered dimms (cost more).

Many mobos claim they support 1GB ddr sticks, but they lie ... the fine print says sticks have to be unbuffered and have < 18 chips on them, which works out to 512Mbit parts ... ETA Q2-2002 from nanya.

Tyan apparently makes two dual cpu athlon-mp motherboards that can take 1GB buffered dimms (says so on their web page), I'll find out if they work next week.

It looks like at this rate, the 3GB system will be closer to $2000, possibly above that even if the ddr prices don't go back to their october levels soon.
