Dirk Meyer and JS have shown slides of 3 and 4 times faster than Classic Athlon at 1Ghz. Assuming a 2 to 2.5 Ghz Launch of Hammer that would be a 20% to 50% increase in IPC using the 3 times faster rate.

We shall see.

wanna - I misunderstood you. I think AMD will assign the model numbers based on actual performance of the Hammers vs. the available NW models so that a 3000+ will have the same performance whether it is a TBred or a Hammer. Hopefully, a 3000+ will maintain the status quo and also be slightly faster than an NW 3GHz.

The scheme of adding 100 MHz to the model number for each 67 MHz increase in clock rate can't go on much further, since the IPC of the XP's is certainly not 50% higher than the NW.

wbmw,

If AMD changes nothing with their model number scheme, then 2.6GHz will come out to a model 3400+. However, I think that model 3400+ will be based at 2.2GHz.

Isn't this discussion a bit premature? AMD will be changing the entire processor core, moving to 64bit, integrating the memory controller. Why would you expect them to change nothing in the model numbering scheme? The current model numbering will probably continue with Thoroughbred / Barton, but with Hammer, the formula will be different.
