China's military is a formidable fighting force. It is not static. Moreover, in sheer numbers well....even you should get the point....

Rich,

While I agree with you, that China does not match up with the United States militarily, you continue to understate them as well. You continue to use the 20 billion dollar number on Chinese military spending. From what I have read, virtually no one actually believes the $20B number - the actual amount is probably a State Secret. I have read that in any case, the $20B EXCLUDES research and development costs of new weapon systems, AND the cost of foreign military purchases (like jets from Russia, or the recently canceled AWACs purchases from Israel). My understanding is that the Chinese have begun a serious effort to modernization of their military - after seeing the results of the Gulf War.

You continue to mention Chinese missiles, and compare them to U.S. warheads. While this comparison is valid currently, apparently SOON the situation will be reversed - the United States will have ICBMs with single warheads, and the Chinese will have ICBMs with multiple warheads. BTW arms treaties limit the number of U.S. long range bombers (and nuclear capable) to around 100.

It seems that while the United States and Russia (Soviet Union) for the past 15 years have been trying to tip toe away from MAD, the Chinese may use this as an opportunity to join the MAD club.
