The man was forced to resign. It is true that the mayor eventually asked him back, and he got a different job, but that was not primarily because the demagogy stopped, but because Williams was widely ridiculed for accepting the resignation, and the tone of racial amity he hoped to set was being ruined on the other side. Williams offered him the original job. If it had all died down, he would have taken it......
