This seems to suggest to that the geeks (a large constituency of sites such as AMD Zone), who are often the self proclaimed Linux users are probably themselves using Windows. I bet that Windows partition of the multiboot computers they have is irresistible.

Joe, give emacs a try if you get a chance. It's a fine editor.

"only text editor being VI"
Man, I hear you. Never was able to memorize how to
exit saving file <ggg>

However, to escape the bronze age of Notepad, you
may want to take a look at

ultraedit.com

Not bad, the "coulmn" mode is especially handy.
But I still am not sure if it can find and
replace non-printable characters...

Joe: Are you talking about text based text editors, or gui based text editors?

emacs is available in both. I usually use it in a SSH session (i.e. text based).

UltraEdit, which Ali mentioned, actually allows you to open and save files directly via FTP. The only downside is that scp is not (yet?) supported.
