Mighty,

Where is the IP data backbone separated from the circuit switched voice in each configuration; GSM1x, GSM/GPRS, 1xrtt? When will they go VOIP and eliminate the circuit switched portion of the network?

Thanks
Pete

hey lazylakers,

it is good to see you finally come back with an excellent post on what I hope to be the buzzzzz of 2002 - GSM1X. I have to admit that I read your posts a couple of times and I suspect many did also. Seriously, thanks.

I have lots of questions but lets start with a few quick ones.

1) what are the QCOM chipsets that can fit into this GSM1X scheme?

2) are all the handsets then equipped with a UIM or SIM card?

3) how soon do you think a commercial launch can technically be accomplished, if your "wishing thinking" dream of China adoption becomes reality?

4) if a current GSM carrier adopts GSM1X path, what will be the next move? GSM 1X - 1X EV DO??

Ramsey

<1x will have higher voice capacity. But if you throw in HDR the equation will change!!!>

These slides from the 3GSM World Congress February 20, 2002
seem to cover this very well.

And since CDMA was designed by internet people to use packets from the start ( comment by Dr P at the SH meeting), CDMA does a much better job of interfacing to the net as far as I can tell. GSM has GPRS to provide a path for packets to connect to the net but seems to have many problems. How does GSM1x interface to the net? Hopefully it will have a better system. WCDMA appears to be stuck with GPRS as a method to connect to the net. Will GSM1x require GPRS as the only way to connect to the net or would there be two paths?

This slide seems to indicate two paths.

but stuck with GPRS?

ML:

So my wildest dream is this. China(I mean the whole China) leading the charge and GSM1x sweeping through the Asia-Euro continent...

Maybe not a wild dream. China Mobile has been having network capacity problems with GPRS in their tests (several articles have been posted on this). China Unicom has also been trialing GPRS on their GSM network with no public reports as yet of either success or problems. OTOH, Unicom is already on the CDMA path, plus there is some evidence in their public justifications for the CDMA network that they believe their present spectrum is inadequate for GSM to support the sub growth they are shooting for. GSM 1x would be a logical step for Unicom, and maybe one Mobile will seriously consider.

So what is GSM1x?

Your explanation was excellent. Just what I was looking for per my post of some days ago. thanks!

I didn't understand this statement in your post: "And 1x will have higher voice capacity. But if you throw in HDR the equation will change!!!" What will change and which has the advantage?

Kindest regards...
