al gore gave many speeches on gun safety...scroll down and look at the left side at this link to see how he practices gun safety for himself.

gopfun.com

i was told that this was released as a photo of him in combat (he is wearing the viet nam boonie hat favored by the troops).
i noticed, his weapon is not loaded and he is carrying NO ammunition pouches.

Mike,

You are a ton of fun. How late did you stay up last night working up that long post?

i also agree there is a difference between pickup drivers in texas and beamer and benz drivers in new jersey...Thank God.

You had me there for a moment. I just checked out the window only to discover that the northern Jersey car replacement bureau hasn't gotten to my house yet with the new Beamer. Still got a 6 year old Camry in the driveway. Would you ask them to hurry up?

i do believe that the Constitution applies to all Americans not a select few. and it doesn't care which side of an amendment you and i are on.

we can't just leave this hanging here.

Can't quarrel with the first part, thank heavens, but I'm not going to get, once again, into one of those posting wars with you in which you simply keep slugging to get in the last word.

There is a very clear national debate on these issues in which some folk wish to argue that the second amendment entitles them to carry assault weapons down their main street and others who argue that it was clear that the framers wished to assert their right to create a militia in opposition to the British. Strangely enough they had never heard of either the NRA or deer hunters with assault rifles.

My only other comment, Mike, relates to this point:

there have various state rulings pro and con on the right to own firearms...but contrary to John's post...none have barred gun ownership altogether. in the last significant state case...

Strangely enough, I think we agree here. I don't know of any state which makes gun ownership illegal. Whether it should be so is something that, so far as I'm concerned, can be argued both ways. We weren't talking about that, however; we were talking about displaying guns openly, such as walking down the street. Somehow, I don't think if you wish to pick up your assault rifle and walk down Broadway in NYC in the morning, you will have a hassle free morning.

Thank heavens.

John

Mike, my mistake, I let that previous post get away before I finished my point.

The last point I wished to make is, once again, about carrying guns, either openly or concealed. I used the illustration of the assault rifle on Broadway in NYC. I could just as easily have used the illustration of carrying it the next time you try to take a commerical airline flight.

Thank heavens, once again,

John

i have been stopped with a handgun on the seat. before the officer got to the car, i placed the pistol on the dashboard.
when he got to the window, i told him, my weapon is on the dash...the trooper thanked me, and said he had seen it. he gave me a warning ticket for a tail light and left.

A couple of questions:

Why would you be carrying a handgun on the seat of your car????
If you had been black, do you think the officer would have been as nonchalant???

I've often wondered if just outlawing handguns period would be helpful. Anyone carrying one is immediately guilty. Other than target range shooting and people popping, they don't seem to have much useful use. Not much hunting wild game with a pistol whereas rifles and shotguns are game hunting practical. Anyone carrying one is immediately guilty.
It would sure make law enforcement easier and perhaps lower all gun threat. Just a thought.
