That means that all of Unicom's CDMA phones are dual mode (two mode) as we speak. The current upgrade of the CDMAONE network to 1xRTT transforms the CDMA network into a dual mode GSM/1X system once the upgrade is complete. I think this explains some of the hardware problems that Unicom is having for their CDMA/GSM phones right now.

I think we have different definitions again.

My understanding of the word "dual-mode" is that it refers to a single handset which can roam between two different air interfaces. Most US CDMA handsets are dual mode since they can go between CDMA and analog...

The SIM card does not allow a CDMA handset to roam onto a GSM network...but rather allows a CDMA subscriber to place the SIM into a separate GSM handset and still be connected. They can be reached at a single number and all phone numbers and saved SMS messages are still available to them. The billing will also show up for only one user....but this solution requires two entirely separate handsets.

If I understand GSM 1x correctly, it will allow a SIM enabled CDMA handset to roam into areas where a CDMA basestation has been placed over a GSM/MAP network.

Nice try, but not even close. Your very confused. CDMAone phones come wiht sim cards because the chinese wanted teh same billing and caller id setup. the AIR INTERFACE is what determines if it is GSM1x or not.

suggest you go fish up the nice post by Mightylakers and actully read what he wrote about how GSM1x works.
