Re: That Athlon speeds up when thermally cooled is a big strike against the wire delay theory

But, especially compared to P4, it doesn't. In fact, one the more striking things about Palomino is that it runs almost as fast with a good fan as it does when cooled with liquid nitrogen.

Look at the .18 chips:

P4 w/LN2 goes from 2.0 to 3.6 - an 80% increase.

AXP w/LN2 goes from 1.7 to 2.2 - a 29% increase.

Note that the chip used for P4 was labeled a 1.6, but it's the same process as the 2.0, so I don't think it should be considered a 100% increase. Also note that going from an LN2 cooled .18 1.6 to an LN2 cooled .13 2.2 only seems to have provided another 100mhz. While .18 P4 was good for 3.6GHZ in LN2, .13 P4 is only good for 3.7GHZ, so far, anyways.

Both Thunderbird and Palomino hit a pretty hard wall of some kind at just over 2.1GHZ - maybe it's speedpath, maybe it's something else. But it might have been fixable, and if it was then a minor upside surprise is coming with Thoroughbred.

Given current expectations, that won't be too hard for AMD to accomplish.

>The problem is that he thought the P4 was great.

Well, it may not be as good as Demone expected, but it's definitely better than you said it was going to be. At this point, it's a higher performer than Athlon and that's most important.
