So most likely scenario is that the HWP/CPQ merged company will offer an INTC high end with some PA-RISC models as well.

I agree. So who will use Hammer? I don't see HWP/CPQ using it and I don't see IBM adding a forth architecture to Power, Itanium and Xeon. Dell is all Intel. Unisys is heavily into Intel too. My bet is Sun, if anybody.

Another "dreamer" ... HWP led the design effort for McKinley. Also
remember that HWP is acquiring CPQ, not the other way around

But HWP is acquiring CPQ partly for its x86 server line, (and partly for other assets like Compaq Global Services). So, its entirely possible they'll let CPQ set the direction for X86 servers, and have no particular attachment to McKinley. I am sure the business decision will be duly made based on just how many dollars of Carly's salary will be subsidized by Intel ;-)

That I agree with. But Elmer asked about how Hammer might do with the combined company. As it stands right now, both Compaq and HP have committed to Itanium; and I don't see a chance for Hammer with either. In the new company, with a new revised lineup; the new company could drop the old agreements, and start fresh, which could give Hammer new life in th low end, with PA-risc and Itanium for high end.
