Ted,

From the little that I know about the subject, sephardic Jews originated from Israel, and more or less migrated through North Africa all the way to Spain. Ashkenazi Jews also originated from Israel and settled in Central Europe Germany and neighboring countries. There is a third group, Khazars, who are descendents of a mix of Turkish and Slavic tribes, who have no blood-line connection to Israel. They just took on missionaries (rabbis) who were Jews from Mid East, just the same way as other Slavs converted to Christianity from either Rome or Byzantium.

The Khazars ruled over wide ranging territory at their peak, but were defeated by the Slavic / Viking (Scandinavian) tribes named Rus. Khazars lived under brutal oppression for centuries, but unlike other groups, that blend into the population of the conquerers, Khazars maintained their religious and cultural heritige. Since the oppression was brutal, many moved westward, to greener pastures, so to speak, these greener pastures beeing Ukraine, Lituania, Poland, and further west to where Ashkenazi Jews lived, and they more or less merged.

The question of who moved which way is not really settled, whether Khazars moved East in great numbers, or Ashkenazi moved west to Russia. The obvious question in my mind is, why would anybody in their right mind (actually, the smartest group people I know of) moved from Central Europe way east, to Russia, where the environment was very inhospitable, rather than moving west to Central Europe.

If that's what you mean, you WOULD think the Semites would have a greater claim to Israel but apparently in Israeli culture its the Ashkenazi Jew who has dominated Israeli affairs. From time to time, the semitic Jews complain of discrimination but whether things have changed or not, I do not know. I am surprised you know nothing about this issue.

I don't really know much about this, but my WAG is that the Ashkenazi Jews are probably more brainy compared to their semitic brethren, thanks to the Russian / Khazar connection.

Joe

>Joe, do you mean semitic Jews [I thought Sephardic was another term for Ashkenazi Jews]? If that's what you mean, you WOULD think the Semites would have a greater claim to Israel but apparently in Israeli culture its the Ashkenazi Jew who has dominated Israeli affairs.

Nope, Sephardic (Sepharad = Spain) Jews are Jews who ended up by the Mediterranean after the Babylonian or Roman expulsions of Jews from Palestine. Ashkenazim are the ones who ended up in Eastern Europe.
