Joe, <On fuel cells, wouldn't it make sense for the big utilities to take lead (if it really is the case), if the fuel cells can be more efficient than the existing turbines?> I don't think fuel cells are more efficient than the turbines in power plants, but it's a heck of a lot more efficient than the internal combustion engine. Combine that with the potential power capacity, and fuel cells become very practical for the road. Tenchusatsu

They have done field tests in Minnesota, which is sort of a worse case for the US. But fuel cells are at the chicken and egg stage, the costs are high because they aren't used much, and they are only used in specialty applications because the cost is so high. In general, it's best to let the market take it's course. But if the goal is to reduce our dependencies on the Middle East, I'd rather see something else developed than go another round with oil. I would rather see a long term solution than to keeps applying bandaids...
