But Israel also has another target: the Palestinian national movement, which aims at ending the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and creating a Palestinian state in its place.

But it appears that the Palestinian national movement's real goal is the destruction of Israel and the creation of a Palestinian state in its place, not the limited goal mentioned in this article. This is what Arafat has proffered in Arabic. As one Palestinian I saw interviewed in the French newspaper Le Figaro observed related to the disastrous policy that has played out « Does Arafat really believe that not a single Israeli understands Arabic ? »

There is a silent minority in the Palestinian territories who would welcome a peaceful and just settlement for both sides, but these people are not in control and rarely heard from today.

>>The disastrous decision of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat not to accept a negotiated settlement of Palestinian claims and his subsequent encouragement of a violent uprising against the Israeli occupation have justified an Israeli response. But they have also given Mr. Sharon and other Israeli nationalists the cover to pursue their own unacceptable ambitions. In the name of uprooting terrorism, they have systematically destroyed the institutions and infrastructure of Palestinian self-government. <<

The infrastructure of a repressive and totalitarian regime is an infrastructure that needs to start anew. After all, it is that infrastructure that plants the seeds of hate and violence from pre school through terrorism 101.
There is good reason to destroy the Voice of Arafat Television just as there is good reason to "loot" the banks of monies that buy the weapons.

That Washington Post editorial is the clearest statement of the issues I've read to date.

Thanks, Win, for posting it.
