The voice differentiation between CDMA and GSM was not enough to do the trick in the past. However, data and capacity are major differentiators between CDMA and GSM which will come into play going forward. I think 2002/2003 will be interesting. The heavy voice users are likely to be heavy data users also. I am hoping to see a mass exodus of high end customers from Cingular, AWE, Voicestream and Nextel. VZ and PCS have the advantage but will they be able to capitalize on it is an open question. They both seem to be fired up.

100cfm. Still think you are wrong. It has all to do with 1) quality of user experience and 2) cost of delivering alwals on megabytes

CDMA has it all on the cost of delivering bits (with network fully utilized). Further, with deversity antenna, The network capacity is scheduled to double again, further cutting the cost of delivering given amount of data.

User experience depends partly on data rate. Clearly, 156Kbps is adequate and CDMA2000 Rev A at 307Mbps is even better. Part two of the user experience is the 1X multimedia, GPS vivid color phone which is arriving starting in July. Part three of the user experience is the killer software apps which Brew and Java enabled Brew will provide.

Part 4 of user experience is easy input/output. It is still a problem to look at those little screens and to type on those little keyboards. There are partial solutions, but it is not obvious that the solutions are adequate. Hopefully, voice recognition, micro-vision, blue tooth and PDA's will provide answers to the I/O questions.

Clearly, if 1X generates a good user experience, then it is only a matter of reducing price to the point that customers exit Cingular, AT&T and Voice Stream because they are unable to offer an equivalent competatively priced service.

100cfm - 1X (data)had always been the resaon for Q's attraction and the US has always been the make or break of that.

VZ offering data for $99 per month means their data offering will fail. My guess is that they are at the moment the only game in town and PCS has everyone with our tongues hanging out for some reason or other.

OK sooner or later they will stop prevaricating and get the product out that the country is waiting for.

Then we will see. My guess is it will be massive and growing as all sorts of new consumer groups get to go with it.

Best,

L

cfm, Time seems to be your worst enemy. We'll be a measly 3 years late.

In fact, I wouldn't set up yet for a big KDDI subscriber number success near term, either. They cannibalized 50% of their April number from their own cdmaOne network.

Cingular figured they could get more from Telekom and NTT than Q, imo. They were not interested in setting up their network for the long term.

Remember that there are only two places in which there have been full blown 1x rollouts, Korea and and Japan, and only one--Japan--in which 1x is competing head to head with another technology. In that market, 1x is doing very well.

Patience. These things do not happen overnight.
