I agree WRT leasing phone but am not so sure about SS numbers. Firstly, I thought it had been declared illegal to demand them for ID purposes, but I am unsure of this. Secondly, what's to stop anyone changing one or two digits of their number?

Dumb question....is fraud included in the churn numbers?

If it is (as it should be), how low would churn be if they could fix the problems with fraud?

I agree that the simplest way to reduce fraud is to simply increase equipment prices. Another option might be to include a rebate on the handset after three months of service.

A little perspective today!

Based on the yesterdays closing price of Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd and it's percentage ownership of Globalstar Limited (GLP) which is in Bankruptcy, and has been in default by not making a bond/debt payment in over 1 1/2. The market cap of GLP was approx. 30 million dollars.

On the other hand. LWIN which has 7X the amount of cash, and about 2000 X the annual revenues of GLP trades at a market cap of only twice that of a Bankrupt/defaulted GLP.

And so it goes.

Leap could sell the phones and throw in 10 shares of stock with each sale. That might help avert fraud, as the new customer would avoid doing things that cause the stock to drop. On the other hand, how much farther can the stock drop? $1.72 or so?

Make the package more appealing by throwing in all of the "extras" (voice-mail, text messaging,.. ) for six months at no additional charge.

Something like this. Nokia 5170i. $129.00

9 months free text messaging and voice mail, caller ID, 3-way calling.. A $145.00 value. (In reality, these products cost Cricket almost nothing to provide)

So if someone is going to remain a customer for 9 months or longer. It's a great deal. If they planned not to use the service that long. Then you probably didn't want them to buy your phone in the first place.

They should give away the stuff that cost them almost nothing, instead of Cash in the form of a subsidy.

2) existing Cricket customers activating service with false information and thereby obtaining a month of free service

Does anyone understand this fraud. How does an existing customer activate service with false information and obtain a free month?

Or do they mean a customer who had their phone deactivated due to non-payment re-activates his old phone as a new customer and obtains a free month of service?

This seems pretty easy to figure out. You just track the ESN of the phone to the previous users call data. When you start matching up telephone numbers where calls were received and placed too. Then you know that they are probably one in the same person. You simply deactivate the phone, and wait for a call to customer service. You ask them to bring the phone to the local Cricket Store along with valid Identification to have the phone repaired/replaced. Chances are. They will never show up, nor will they attempt to reactivate it again under invalid information.

In addition, they should require any second hand handset being activated to be presented at the Cricket Store with valid ID to have the "Software Updated" or activation can not proceed.

These functions carried out by the Cricket Store would be more valuable than accepting payments.
