London-based mobile industry body the UMTS Forum Thursday signed a letter of understanding with U.S.-based counterpart 3G Americas to work together with operators and vendors to promote global migration to third-generation mobile technology. In a joint statement, the two said: "[This] partnership marks the dedication of both parties to ensure the realization of UMTS as an evolutionary road for TDMA and GSM operators." They plan to support the market through promotional and educational activities aimed at increasing industry confidence in the potential for 3G technologies and markets, but it's clearly early days. "This agreement is just the foundation," Chris Pearson, vice president of Bellevue, Washington-based 3G Americas, told Total Telecom. "We now need to sit down and concentrate on concrete issues, such as how we bring UMTS to the Americas, and whether the spectrum [to do this] will be available." The combined force will also concentrate on combating the hype that has surrounded the perception of 3G, resulting in part in the current market backlash. "We need to talk about the realities of 3G, what speeds [subscribers] can get, and how it can make people's lives more productive," he said. This involves both organizations bringing operators and vendors together to put migration strategies from TDMA, GSM, GPRS and EDGE technologies to W-CDMA in place. Both organizations will still work independently in their respective Europe and Americas power-bases, but 3G Americas for one will not be supporting operators or vendors relying on CDMA. "The marketplace has chosen GSM and UMTS, and the evolution from GSM technologies covers about 80% of the marketplace," said Pearson explaining this decision. This means the CDMA industry must rely on sources of support other than the 3G Americas organization. Explaining the relationship between the two organizations, the UMTS Forum's chairman Bernd Eylert said, "We will work together to discuss and develop 3G strategies that are of particular interest to both organizations, but will continue to work independently as well." totaltele.com
