Good post, Neocon.

Thus far, the occupation has been comparatively light, or the terrorists would not be able to function so boldly

The terrorists have been functioning out of Area A -- territory not occupied by the Israelis at all until their recent and (so far) temporary incursions. However, the situation is moving towards Israeli re-occupation piece by piece, unattractive as this is to the Israelis, let alone the Palestinians.

I would also add since both sides are jockying for "righteous victim" status in world opinion, the actual conflict has been marked by incrementalism on both sides, not sudden and bold moves.

Hi Neocon; Re: "You are quite wrong. The destruction of Israel and the driving of Jews out of Palestine are goals articulated in the PLO charter, and reiterated by sundry players since the creation of Israel was imminent."

I never said that the "destruction of Israel" was not a goal of the Palestinians. In fact, Jesus weeps, I've repeatedly asserted that they are going to succeed in doing it!

Eventually the Israelis will either begin negotiations from a position of weakness and obtain a state that gives them some rights and guarantees (or at least promises to do so), or they will be taken down by force. I'm putting my money on the negotiation route, but I do not deny that another Holocaust is possible. The presence of a religious right wing in Israel that will delay negotiations for as long as possible increases this chance, but the fact is that most Israelis do not believe that G-d will protect their country.

I've repeatedly posted that there was nothing unique about Hitler or Germany, and that genocide of that nature is a natural part of the human inclination. Of course it can happen in Palestine; I agree most strongly about this. Where we probably disagree on is in how to minimize the chance of this happening, and any differences there are probably due to disagreements on what the limitations of US military power are.

P.S. Simply because one side is more moral than the other is not a reason to expect there is a way that the more moral side can prevail in a conflict. The world is more complex than that.
