Do you have your virtual memory set at a constant size or are you letting Windows manage it?

Do you have any programs set to update automatically? Any scheduled tasks? Winme has system restore. Could this be set to make a restore point automatically? If memory serves, Goback operates this way. Not much help but maybe it'll give you an idea.

You problem sounds like: "The computer is going into sleep mode" {Stand-by mode}
Possibly a setting in the motherboard Bios?

Time how long after you stop activity before it starts this process.

Are you running allot of programs or one "pig with wings" program with limited RAM? Check how your virtual memory is setup. Also as others have mentioned, the indexing functionality of the Fast Find can be to blame here. Is this a consistent problem that starts up when the bootup sequence is finished? Boot in safe mode and see what happens.
