Mish,

There's another question which achieves the same thing. You ask the the chosesn farmer (T or L) what would the other one say if I asked him which was the correct path). T will say left as he knows L is a liar and L will say left as he will lie about T answer. Either way you then have the path to avoid.

Michael

Mish,

You said, "If you chose the person selected that person will always be L or T and never U."

Again, I receive an answer from farmer L and he obviously says T. And if I asked U he has the same opportunity to lie and say T. Therefore, I select T for one of the two remaining farmers. BUT it appears to me that either L could have lied and said T or U could have lied and said T. In either case I don't know if U or L lied and said T. The case has to be fool proof and I say you have not eliminated U with a single question to one and only one farmer.

If you ask all three farmers the same question, then I agree that U is eliminated.
