I used to hang out with some people in the SDS. They really hated the establishment. One of my best friends used to end every communication with "don't forget to smash the state."

That's bizarre.

On the other hand, I know a significant number of folks in academia whose political opinions haven't changed since the 1960s. They would be very uncomfortable in most industries, because most business types are conservative, but academia gives them a haven.

How about this phrase: "they would be very uncomfortable in most industries, because most business cultures, large business cultures are authoritarian, but the faculty academic culture is more entrepeneurial." That is faculty members are on their own, very much their own bosses but if they don't perform they don't get tenured and if they are already tenured, they have a devil of time getting decent raises.
