65 per cent of Europeans said that the European Union should become a superpower similar to the US.

I'm reading Will Hutton's "The World were in" as we speak. It's a European super plan to unite Europe in every sense. The Euro will be our single currency (The USA dollar was an important step for the USA to becoming a strong single nation). The USA's power will be undermined by weakening the Republicans and restoring liberals to power.-g-

I'm being a little sarcastic of course. He does spend most of the book bashing Republicans though. I prefer working smart then plain hard. I am reading the book to be aquainted with the facts and arguments rather then as a "believer" btw.

they'd better get rid of 35 hour work weeks

The 35 hour work week is a trade union myth which mainly applies to public service. In the private economy the capable people are doing a lot of overtime work. 50-70 h/week are not uncommon, some physicians have >100 h/week.

Our pollution devastates the earth, e.g., the recent floods in Central Europe.

I know there is a strong temptation to say this but government reports from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany all agree that the problem lies in bad land management practices upriver.

If the river had been allowed to expand into its natural flood plains, the surge would have worked its way downriver over a period of weeks -- even months.

Instead, the river, walled in on every side, produced 80 (!!!) times normal flows as estimated in Prague.

It will be most interesting to watch how future commentary presents the story of this disaster.
