I second that:

No more lousy investments.
No more junk bond investments.

Return extra cashflow to shareholders in dividends and stock buybacks.

< I "promise" that if QCOM were to announce the intention of beginning to pay dividends now or in the relatively near future, it would boost the stock price immediately.>

If QUALCOMM starts paying dividends from now on, it'll really get people excited. They wouldn't need to pay it all out either. Just start with some of it with a view to increasing it.

Simply investing in a R&D company isn't that exciting unless there is a clear and present requirement with especially good abilities in the targeted developments.

The attitude of, "Omigosh, look at all the money we've got sitting there - let's have some fun and invent some more stuff", is a bit too much like politicians. Alan Green$pan was quite right to recommend tax cuts [even though the huge surpluses disappeared immediately afterwards] to stop it being frittered away in madcap ideas. There is no need whatsoever to fund CDMA service providers now - the market is huge, especially now that China and Japan are well underway. Maybe Globalstar still needs support because few people understand the technological prospects and market possibilities - QUALCOMM can prove the thing then sell out to telecom service providers who want to boast of 100% coverage.

I agree, let's see a cheque made out to shareholders. That would demonstrate that the company understands that the objective of the company is to return profits to people who put their hard-earned money up to deliver CDMA to subscribers. The confidence that would give shareholders and analysts would turn QUALCOMM into a market leader and give a turbo boost to the share price.

They could start small, to confirm the popularity of such an idea and increase it if people like it. Buying back the company's shares doesn't seem such a good idea.

Technology is fun, but most shareholders really get excited about the dollars. It makes them drool.

PS: Edit... Hey, Tom, who you calling crazy? You know, it was 6 years ago now that QUALCOMM was getting a following in SI. I would never have thought that what would happen from Jan 1996 to now would happen. I suppose that means we should be ready for more of the same or even more dramatic perhaps. It's great living in interesting times. Never a dull moment. Michael Allard's an old die-hard too...
