When a novelist writes in first person, are the things the character in the novel say the acts of the novelist as person? That's what Solon has to argue if his argument is to make any sense.

Your point is true enough. We have to assume no especial effort to mislead, and a reasonable range of interaction and completeness of expression. Even then, it is tricky to interpret the meaning of a lot of actions, and not all persons are equally experienced or insightful. On the other hand, the assumption that someone is posting as himself, alias or not, is pretty much the default position, especially if he evidences a fair degree of spontaneity and consistency in his responses. Additionally, there may be knowledge that one has that is validating. In my case, for example, I know that it has to be Hodgkins or a St. John's alumnus who knows something about Hodgkins, because of the person's detailed knowledge of St. John's, and accuracy on material I know about Hodgkins. The likelihood of someone going to the trouble to dissimulate required is very small. Thus, it increases my confidence that it is Hodgkins.....
